What's the best way to break into the outdoor recreation and outdoor adventure fields?

Pearlie Medora: You are being kind of vague here. "Outdoor recreation" encompasses a number of activities and sports. Find the one that you are most interested in and dive in from a recreational perspective. Get involved in local clubs that focus these activities. Make as many friends as you can, learn as much as you can, go on as many trips as possible. Once established and confident in your skills, start planning your own outings and take newbies along with you. Being the trip leader offers its own challenges. Use your contacts to find available entry level position with various guide companies. NOLS and outward bound are great programs. They will add legitamacy to your resume so they know that you've been trained by some of the best. In the mean time, dive in from a recreational perspective. The more you learn the more valuable you will be.BTW, a college degree, unless it is in some outdoor capacity, wont lend much to your resume when applying for a job in outdoor recr! eation.-Good luck...Show more
