How is the rail travel in the UK.?

Neville Dautremont: It's dead easy - all the major towns and citys are on rail routes with seldom more than an hour or two journey between them. There's a lot of smaller out of the way places too you can get too. Most of the major lines (say Glasgow - Edinburgh) run a train every half hour or so.Prices can be a bit much - depending on the time your'e travelling and a bit over crowded - but seldom to the point of your having to stand.The trains are all modern, clean and not prone to delays and the station staff are generally helpful and friendly.Since the past year or so most of the stations have installed ticket machines and barriers - so not much chance of being able to skip your fare but at the same time there's seldom that you have to wait around at ticket offices....Show more

Cliff Tyre: I have never travelled by rail in Scotland, but I did live in East Anglia and London for two years and used the rail frequently. I've also travelled by rail in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria so I'll give you my observations. In the UK, it seemed like the trains were more for commuting...they didn't have seperate compartments with overhead luggage space like the trains in those other parts of Europe. So when I travelled with luggage in the UK, I just left it in the door space and watched it from my seat. Most likely rail will connect you to all the big cities (Edinburough, Aberdeen, Glasgow) easy enough and the trips will only take an hour or so.
