What is normal laundry room etiquette for idle, unattended, FULL washing machines in a public laundry mat?

Rayford Speziale: Sounds like this person was just being a prick. You're not supposed to leave your laundry unattended anyway, so if someone's left it sitting there and you need the machine, it's only fair that you get to move it to so you can do your own laundry. As far as "etiquette", just be respectful about handling their things. Don't steal any, don't drop it on the floor, etc. But if the person's really concerned about other people touching their laundry, they should just stay there while it washes....Show more

Janeen Perona: This happened to me when I was at halls. I usually take a clean bin bag with me down to the launderette so that if a washing machine/dryer with somebody's load finishes and they don't go to it when I need the machine, I remove the clothing and either put it into the bin bag or on top of the bin bag on top of the washing machine/dryer in question. If someone protests then protest back! And if they get nasty with you, tell them you'll dump i! t on the street and they should be happy you took the time to put it on a clean bag. They should think twice given that you've been courteous to take care of their washing by supplying a bag....Show more

Leisa Brodnex: You were NOT in the wrong for doing what you did. When I lived in my apartment they had signs posted stating that if you were using the laundry room that you were supposed to stay with your laundry. This person didn't stay so to bad for them. Maybe this experience will teach the other person a lesson.

Somer Distilo: I agree with you, you were definitely right to do what you did.

Toby Caswell: You are 100% correct. I have done that many times in my life. The person you had the confrontation with is just ignorant.

Julee Lanham: You were certainly in the right! Everyone else had good answers but I thought I'd share my experience..I live in a building with 3 other apartments - We have one washer and one dryer. I obviously end up coming ! across this problem fairly frequently and although you were to! tally right in what you did.. this is what I often do.As long as the load does not include personal items such as underwear and it's in the dryer.. I take the time to fold their clothes after I take them out. It only takes a second and I find people are less angry to see folded clothes than those in a ball on top of the dryer. This does not work obviously as well if they were in the washer.. but I've found myself paying for their things to be dried and then hoping when they come to gather their things they leave quarters replacing what I've spent. And if they don't.. and you don't do it often, so what it got things out of the way and was only a couple quarters lost. Better than having angry neighbors in my opinion!...Show more

Javier Holsonback: I think you need to be very careful about where you put the wet laundry. I suspect that's what the person's beef was. I'd be very upset if someone put my unattended laundry on a dusty shelf or something. In a dryer would be! totally cool.
