Sang Hanafin: Optical cable will give you 5.1 digital surround sound and you should connect it directly from Xbox to system, not TV.
Danica Timperman: You should use the optical connection. You can't get 5.1 surround using the red/white stereo cables. The best they will give you is a crappy "virtual surround" mode which is what you are experiencing. Connect with optical to start getting Dolby Digital (the 5.1 format used for most 360 games and DVDs). As for how to connect, you can go straight from the Xbox to the stereo, or, if the TV allows, go from that. That way anything running through your TV will be connected to the stereo.Some TVs don't allow audio from external devices (like your 360) to be output through the optical port.
