Roman entertainment questions?

Wilfred Santacruce: The similarity between the two is the shape of the structure and that both are/were used for entertainment. The most famous of roman Circuses is the circus maximus where the chariot horse racing took place. I believe the circus was also used for theatre.As for the popular forms of entertainment, it would depend on where you sat in Roman society. The common people were known for gambling and heavy drinking (much like today’s western society) and would attend the state religious celebrations if they held the correct citizen requirements.The Gladiators had an almost celebrity status if they performed well, however they were still owned by the lanistae as slaves. I suppose the blood games appealed to the people of the time, they were a city , a nation, that took pride in the fact that Rome’s founder was the son of mars - their god of war. Cedric Grimstead: First question: gladiator fights & racesSecond question: Several answers: Firstly, most Romans had never been in war or had seen any barbarians fight in the wars. The gladiator contests gave them a chance of seeing some foreign fighters in action. Secondly, it was a morale boost, Romans organise barbarian fighters to be killed. It's a kind of depiction that they had control over these peoples. Thirdly, doesn't everyone like a horror film every now and again? There is some sort of morbid human fascination with seeing someone die. Lastly, fighting was a sport-art combination comparable to tennis or football/soccer. It was just nice to watch an expert do stuff you couldn't do.Third question: circuses of today don't feature violence or death, but humor and peculiarities....Show more

Mitchel Demry: im not 100% sure! but i think gladiator fights and public executions/humilation! parades were the 2 most popular forms of entertainment. they enjoyed the fights bcuz they took pleasure form seeing those they viewed lesser than them put to harm...not 100% sure though. sorry
