Can the airline switch the aircraft type for your flight?

Elden Bardach: Yes, they can switch the aircraft type...

Alma Twomey: Of course. However, there aren't many reasons that would warrant switching out the whole plane, and most stuff can be fixed perfectly fine at the gate. Anyway, it's more likely that nothing will go wrong, and I wouldn't worry about it. Delta has a great TechOps division and they do a great job maintaining aircraft. Airlines don't want cancelled or delayed flights as it can mess them up more than it messes you up if that plane is scheduled to operate different flights later in the day....Show more

Vickie Sterbenz: Yes airline can change the aircraft type if they want to. The only problems may be in the seat configuration were you have booked a seat and the newer aircraft does not have that row or not as many business class seats as on the original aircraft. Usually there is no change to the time or day of departure. In any case it would be up to the airline to change your booking (at no f! ee to you).

Vince Delarge: They can switch anything they want to anytime they want to. My friend recently bought tickets on a large comfy plane and they switched to a tiny, cramped, miserable plane. they get to change anything anytime and you can do nothing about it. On the other hand, you can change nothing. If you buy a ticket and break both legs and cannot travel, you cannot get a refund or change the name on the ticket. Everything, every single thing is for their advantage.

Hal Palowoda: Most definitely. Usually however an airline is going to run the same equipment between point A and point B because pilots have to be certified on each type of plane. If they substitue an MD80 for an A320 they'd have to find a different crew, and that's usually impossible. So if you booked an A320 it's a 95% sure bet that's what they'd replace it with the same thing if it was short notice. That said - the seating arrangement might not be the same - some planes have an! extra row of seats or a different galley set-up, etc. So you! might not get the same seat number. The gate attendants are usually very helpful and will try to get you what you booked. Remember to thank them -they have a thankless job. Also - use Seat Guru ( http://www.seatguru.com ) to find your plane and see what your seats will be like. If you fly a lot you'll quickly learn where the good seats are....Show more

Tyler Burkman: If there are mechanical problems they might substitute an aircraft but will normally try to use one of the same type. When they are switching to new aircraft a substitute might well be the type and if a type is grounded for safety reasons (the way the A380 was last year) they will have to use a different type of aircraft.Delta is a 'full service' airline so they do everything they can to keep customers happy and most people don't mind a change of aircraft type but they do mind being stranded away from home. If your booking is with a discount airline the flight will be cancelled and all they will d! o for you is to give you a refund. I once had to wait 11 months before receiving a refund from JetStar Asia.If you read the small print in the terms and conditions for your booking most airlines reserve the right to change the type of transportation that they use. They could substitute a bus, train or boat if they feel like it (or if Icelandic volcanoes mean that they can't fly)....Show more

Brock Anwar: Yes they certainly can, and often do. There is spares at the major hubs. But remember, DELTA = Don't expect luggage 'til april
